  • Used reason and deduction to learn truths about the material world
  • "Cogito, Ergo Sum" - I think, therefore I am.


Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679)

  • English political theorist
  • Government had absolute power
  • This power would restrain man's dark nature


 John Locke (1632-1704)

  • English doctor and political theorist
  • Natural right to "life, liberty, property"
  • Government can be overthrown if they start ruling with absolute power
